![]() Terrifying Horror Movies Featuring Isolated Environments. A reader recently posed the question on our site asking what are the best closed environment horror movies around. It’s a loaded question since like all sub genres of horror there are literally thousands of films which makes it tricky to answer. But we are always up for a challenge! I have compiled 2. I think are outstanding examples of closed environment horror movies where the isolation plays into the terror of the overall film. That said I will concede this may not in fact be the 2. ALIENWhen it comes to sci- fi horror there is no higher standard then Ridley Scott’s science fiction masterpiece ALIEN. Bunyip is an Australian horror-action. Denby is an adventure enthusiast and has been rock climbing. She is also the writer and co-director of The Bunyip Movie. The Cave is a 2005 American action horror film. The diving team includes rock-climbing professional Charlie. The Cave; The Cave on Internet Movie Database;.Sigourney Weaver stars as Ripley the captain of a commercial space mining ship that is suddenly assaulted by an unknown creature with a penchant for gestation. ALIEN is one of the greatest horror movies of all time and its isolation factor is one of the many ways it succeeds. Evil Dead. Sam Raimi’s original masterpiece from 1. In this 1. 98. 1 Classic Bruce Campbell stars as a man with a nosy penchant for reading old scholarly books he can not understand. In doing so he unleashes great evil and must fight to survive with his girlfriend in a Cabin in the Woods. VIRUSJamie Lee Curtis is best known for her work on Halloween but she has done quite a few other films not least of which is the 1. VIRUS co starring Donald Sutherland and William Baldwin. Its the story of a crew of salvagers who board an abandoned military ship and soon encounter unholy hell and complete terror as an alien signal from space turns the ship they are stranded on into a living breathing nightmare. Frozen. Adam Green is best known for HATCHET but for me his best work is definitely SPIRAL And Frozen. Hatchet was a tribute to old school American horror but was far from genre bending. Spiral is the greatest psychological thriller since PSYCHO and Frozen which makes this list brings new meaning to environmental terror. When I was interviewed by the NY Times I spoke highly of FROZEN so it should come as no surprise it makes this list. Frozen takes a normal routine trip to the ski hill and turns it into a life and death affair with the most unexpected of villains a ski lift. Adam Green is without question one of the most talented up and coming directors and FROZEN is a film that proves it. The Colony. If you have never heard of this 2. Jeff Renfroe dont be surprised. I found it by sheer happenstance while snooping through video rentals. Mainstream critics seem to have nothing good to say about the movie but for me its a gem starring two greats in Lawrence Fishburne and Bill Paxton. The Colony is the story of a group of people forced underground by the next ice age who must struggle to survive in an old Norad bunker against the bitter new global catastrophy. True to form they soon find that their is much more to fear then just the snow. A truly outstanding film ! Dawn of the Dead. Really you can pick your poison as to which one you prefer. I loved George Romero’s original and Zack Snyder’s reboot starring the incredibly talented Sarah Polley is a great tribute to the original while bringing a whole new angle to the story. Dawn of the Dead is the story of a group of survivors who hole up in a local shopping mall to wait out a zombie apocalypse. Romero’s version released in 1. Zack Snyder’s 2. 00. RECJaume Balaguer. Set in an apartment building it is the story of a reporter doing a story on the fire department who goes on a call to an Apartment building and finds herself trapped with its occupants and something much worse. It was remade in 2. Screen Gems and Vertigo and frankly even the remake was a solid film. The DAYThe Day was released in 2. Shawn Ashmore ( Lost ) and is a really unique apocalyptic tale that features non stop carnage, a great plot and a polished ensemble cast of relative unknowns. The Day takes risks and it works resulting in a real treat! In The Day a group of five people are fighting to stay alive in a post apocalyptic future. They seek shelter in an abandonded farmhouse looking for food and soon find themselves matching wits with bloodthirsty predators bent on making them lunch. The Divide. Xavier Gens is an incredibly talented director and his 2. The Divide is just another star on his cap. Starring Michael Biehn and Milo Ventimiglia its the story of a group of survivors who are caught in a Nuclear attack. They take shelter in a basement apartment building and with supplies, wits and courage dwindling the group quickly turns on each other. The Divide is a powerful movie with a believable and powerful story but it is also brutal and unforgiving. The Divide is a truly terrifying movie and one that everyone should experience. Splinter. Toby Wilkins is a really talented director. His film SPLINTER was shot on a shoestring budget and is about a criminal who car jacks a couple and ends up trapped with them in a gas station as a . It’s the closest thing to THE THING you will see and its also a completely new and terrifying story that pays tribute to the classic horror of The Thing without ripping it off. Night of the living dead: Night of the Living Dead set it off for the zombie genre. I know it’s a bit sacrilegious to say but I would encourage you to not just checkout the 1. George Romero directed but also checkout the remake which Tom Salvini directed and George Romero produced. For me Romero’s was better because it was the first but just too really stir the pot I think Salvini’s version offered more for Zombie fans. Tom Savini is a complete jerk from my experiences meeting him but he is one hell of a talented FX guy and Director. Night of the Living Dead is of course about the end of the world as the dead walk and a group of stranger’s band together in a farmhouse to survive the end of the world. The Descent. The descent is the perfect movie to scare the hell out of you if you have a fear of small spaces or are severely claustrophobic. I am not sure if I have severe claustrophobia but I can tell you I do not like tight spaces and The Descent made me sweat. Add to the fact that when a group of rock climbing women get trapped in the caves they encounter a new species bent on making them lunch and you have one hell of a creepy film of terror, isolation and claustrophobia. I would also encourage you to check out the sequel Descent 2 which just hit DVD and is almost as good as the first one. Right At your Door. Right at Your Door is a truly fantastic indie film of apocalyptic destruction. The film is entirely based around a small house where a man barricades himself in after a dirty bomb goes off in downtown LA. Unfortunately his wife was at work and soon returns home where he must make the decision to let her in and face infection or keep her out and try to survive. The film is a fantastic character piece with a ton of thrills, great dialogue and an ending that will impress you. Really one of the best lesser known films or isolated terror. The Mist. A lot of people did not like The Mist but I for one thought it was a fantastic film. It’s the story of a storm that hits a small community and a mist that rolls in and brings an evil with it. The community bands together in a local shopping mart and tries to survive what could very well be the end of the world. The Mist is a fantastic sci- fi- horror tale with an ending that literally had me gasping. Blindness. Blindness stars Mark Buffalo and Julianne Moore and is about a plague of blindness that is running rampant throughout the world. Those who are infected are quarantined into a small prison like facility and must try to survive as the world around them collapses. If they try to leave the army will kill them but if they stay inside worse things are waiting as humanity slowly leaves their prison as desperation and viciousness settles in. A truly disturbing and intense horror film that is one of my personal favourites of the last 1. Pontypool. Pontypool is the closest thing to Night of the Living Dead you will get without ripping it off completely. It tells the story of a Disc Jockey who is on the air as the world comes to an end due to a strange virus spread by the sound waves which turns people into zombie like maniacal killers. This film is quite similar to the new film DEAD AIR which starred Bill Moseley accept Ponty. Pool plays out quite literally like a well thought out stage play. Intense characters, very little action and literally only 3 rooms in the entire film but it’s a movie that will stay with you and impress the hell out of you. If you liked CARRIERS you will definitely want to check out PONTYPOOL. The Shining. Jack Nicholson starred in this film about a boy and his family who go to a hotel to maintain it in the off season only to have dear old dad go absolutely bananas and try to kill the family. Jack Nicholson put himself on the map with this role and quite frankly he plays crazy a little too well for my liking. The Shining is one of those movies every horror fan should see. Day of the Dead. This was a tough one I couldn’t decide between Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead for quite awhile since both are such fantastic films. I ended up going with Day over Dawn mainly because in Day of the Dead they focus on survivors of the zombie apocalypse living in an underground bunker and for me it felt more isolated then the mall setting of Dawn of the Dead. I am of course talking about George Romero’s originally Day of the Dead here. You can check out the sequel starring Mena Suvari or Day of The Dead 2 Contagium but only if you like being stabbed in the face with a rusty fork. Where Romero’s original story is genius the remakes/sequels are REALLY REALLY bad. End of the Line. End of the Line is a low budget Canadian horror film about a group of religious nuts who conspire to set off the end of days and actually manage to pull it off. All Films - Steep. Edge. It stars Cole Hauser, Eddie Cibrian, Morris Chestnut, Marcel Iure. As they venture inside and below the church, they make a startling discovery: the abbey is built over the entrance to a vast subterranean cave system. When they try to blast their way in, they cause a landslide that buries the abbey and the men are trapped in the cave below it. Once they recover, they continue on into the cave without a choice in hopes of finding a way out, but as they do, they hear strange sounds coming from the darkness. Thirty years later, a team of archeologists are excavating the ruins of the same abbey, where they unearth images of a medieval battle between the Knights Templar and winged demons, and discover the cave system with its massive underground river. The team is led by Dr. Nicolai (Marcel Iure. Local biologists believe the cave could contain an undiscovered ecosystem, so they hire a group of American spelunkers led by Jack Mc. Allister (Cole Hauser) and his brother Tyler (Eddie Cibrian) to help them investigate its unknown depths. Jack and Tyler are thrill- seeking professional cave explorers who run a world- famous team of divers. They arrive in Romania with the latest equipment, including a modified rebreather system allowing a diver to remain submerged for up to 2. The diving team includes rock- climbing professional Charlie (Piper Perabo), first scout Briggs (Rick Ravanello), sonar expert Strode (Kieran Darcy- Smith) and survival expert Top Buchanan (Morris Chestnut). As they begin the expedition, Briggs is sent to scout and when contact is lost they decide to press on in the likelihood that it's simply an equipment malfunction. After the group finds him safely downriver, Strode is suddenly attacked and dragged away by a large, unknown creature. His water scooter explodes and causes a cave- in, forcing them to follow the river and search for a new way out. Katheryn and Nicolai discover a strange parasite in all of the lifeforms they find. Unlike all the known cave species which have simply adapted over the generations to life underground, Katheryn believes this new parasite originated in the cave environment and has never been exposed to the outside world. As they progress the team occasionally stumble across scattered equipment and remains of previous explorers, and are unaware they are being stalked by the creatures. They descend through a series of rapids, where Nicolai is attacked and Jack goes after him. Nicolai is dragged into a crevice but Jack breaks free, injured, after seeing letters clearly tattooed on one of the creatures. Jack also begins to exhibit a transformation of his senses, and physical features. When Jack tells them they must go up again to get out, Charlie scales the wall and is attacked by a creature hidden in the passage above. She nearly drops to her death, but recovers, before the man- size winged creature guts her and kills her on the cliff face in full view of the team. Jack's transformations are beginning to show with his super- keen senses and inhumanly slanted pupils. Katheryn speculates that Jack, the previous explorers, and all the rest of creatures mutated because of the parasite. In the case of humans, they resemble demons. As they see Jack changing they suspect his motives and his judgement and the team splits up. Alex, Briggs, and Katheryn decide to go their own way but Top and Tyler stay with Jack. Jack, Top and Tyler discover a cavern littered with human skeletons and realize that this is the ancient battleground depicted in the abbey above, which sealed the cave to prevent the creatures from escaping. After they see daylight through the underwater passage ahead, Tyler goes back to find the others, but Briggs dies defending Katheryn and Alex, while the creatures enter the cavern and steal the rebreathers necessary to navigate the passage. Alex is killed before they can get in the water, but Tyler, Katheryn and Top escape while Jack stays behind to hold off the creatures. The three survivors return to civilization, and Top goes his own way. Tyler asks Katheryn if Jack could have survived out in the open. She is quiet a moment then says she had thought that the parasite could only survive underground, but now she is uncertain and thinks that it wants to get out. She bends down to kiss him, looking over the rim of her sunglasses revealing pupils like Jack's as she has begun to mutate. As Katheryn suddenly gets up and walks away, Tyler realizes that Katheryn knows she is infected with the parasite and intends to remain free, able to infect others. He runs after her frantically, but she disappears in the crowd. Eddie Cibrian as Tyler Mc. Allister, a thrill- seeking professional cave explorer and one of the two main protagonists. Morris Chestnut as Top Buchanan, a survival expert. Daniel Dae Kim as Alex Kim, a cameraman. Cole Hauser as Jack Mc. Allister, a thrill- seeking professional cave explorer and the second main protagonist. Lena Headey as Katheryn Jannings, a scientist. Marcel Iure. Nicolai, a scientist. Rick Ravanello as Briggs, a member of the dive team. Piper Perabo as Charlie, a rock- climbing professional. Kieran Darcy- Smith as Strode, a sonar expert. Vlad R. Bacovia. Reception. The consensus on Rotten Tomatoes is, . But whereas those films managed to inject new life into tired territory, The Cave, his first effort as director, fails to generate anything resembling innovation. The creature is simply an amalgamation of monsters we’ve seen before. Also, the single Nemo by Nightwish is featured during the end credits of the film. References. Rotten Tomatoes. Rotten Tomatoes. Tube fame requires no more than a goofy pet. So what would Satan offer Americans today to win our souls? How about easy consumption? It’s not ambition he needs to appeal to, but our acquisitiveness and sloth. He can show us a picture of a thing — a book, a bauble, a sweater, a vacuum cleaner — and ask three questions: “Do you want it?” Even if we don’t click yes, we can scroll past to the next item, and the next, all offered with equal enthusiasm and zero judgement, unlike the cranky, now unemployed sales clerk who used to work at the mall. Then he smote Borders, Crown, Brentano’s and B. Dalton, followed by the crippling of Barnes & Noble. Andrea Vuleta, executive director of the Southern California Independent Booksellers Assn., doesn’t think Lucifer makes much money off books. She thinks he wants our “information” to sell us everything else, and to get his technology into our houses so we will order laundry detergent and toilet paper with the push of a button. The bookstores didn’t entirely disappear. Cary Loren of Michigan’s Book Beat points out that bricks and mortar establishments still offer things you just can’t do online. In regard to Amazon, he sighed: “There’s no defense or revenge. Watching the bookstore die- off in horror back then, I wondered if it would end in writers’ losing all control over the written word. If the devil hated cats, say, would that mean the end of publication or sales of books that mention cats? It hasn’t happened yet, but the sinister possibility looms — every choice we make among newspapers, magazines, music, movies, television, fashion, furniture, gadgets, accessories, toys, cameras, dildos and groceries can be accessed by some Big Data decision maker. Draw the curtains, lock the door, and arm yourself to the teeth, the boogeyman is coming. We all love a good scare, and what better way to give yourself the willies than by watching a good modern horror. Bogged down in reboots, remakes, and rehashes, the horror landscape can sometimes seem clogged with more of the same; however, with a resurgence in innovative films, the genre is bloodier and bolder than ever before. Gone are the days of wobbly sets, corn syrup, and food coloring, and more cheese than you can grill on a sandwich, while horror is back to remind you that it never really went away. Sure, we may never return to the highs of films like Halloween or A Nightmare on Elm Street, but there are some serious contenders out there. As one of the most- anticipated horrors of 2. Zombieland – 9. 0%Year: 2. Rating: 9. 0% based on 2. A fresh take on the tried and tested zombie film, Ruben Fleischer’s. Zombieland showed that the aging zombie genre was anything but dead. A witty take on the lighter side of the end of the world, the film followed four unlikely allies as they trod the American backwaters while staving off each other and hordes of the undead. Zombieland gave us a whole new appreciation of Twinkies and Bill Murray, while everyone remembers the rules on how to survive a zombie apocalypse. The lead cast of Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin were all perfect in their roles during the apocalypse, while Eisenberg especially excelled in his usual role as the uncomfortable nerd that you love to hate. Harrelson himself said that when filming wrapped, he hugged the writers and said he had never wanted to do a sequel until Zombieland, so why a sequel hasn’t been made yet is a mystery and a crime. When Park’s sister Hyun- seo is kidnapped by the giant amphibious monster, Seoul descends into panic. Along with his father, his other sister – who happens to be archery champion – and his alcoholic brother, the family’s only mission is to rescue Hyun- seo when she reveals she is trapped in the sewers with the creature. As monster movies go, it is up there with the likes of Cloverfield, while riffing off the classic nostalgia towards Japan’s Godzilla. The creature itself is like an Alien Xenomorph, hunting its victims in a nationwide epidemic before retreating to its underground lair. The inspiration came from a 2. Han River with an S- shaped spine. The Host was the perfect mix of family and fear, so it is no surprise that it set a Korean box office record by selling over 1. Shaun Of The Dead – 9. Year: 2. 00. 4Rating: 9. Not only one of the best horror films out there, but also one of the best comedies ever, Shaun of the Dead crosses into that rare territory of zom- com. Directed by Edgar Wright, and written by/starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, Shaun of the Dead formed part of the duo’s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, which included Hot Fuzz and The World’s End. As easily their best work, it isn’t hard to imagine that the Zombieland creators watching this 2. The film is so well received, George A. Romero even offered Pegg and Frost a role in his film Land of the Dead. Following two layabout Englishmen who would rather sip pints than save their loved ones, Shaun of the Dead was British humor at its very finest. The true magic comes from the film’s constant references to Romero’s Dead films, without coming off as a Scary Movie- type parody film. Shaun of the Dead was deadpan in its delivery, while still using the F- word over 7. Featuring the who’s who of British comedy, cameos included Billy Nighy, Jessica Hynes, Peter Serafinowicz, and Martin Freeman. Shaun of the Dead is a ray of light in an otherwise dismal genre and even features its own version of a happy ending – what more could you want? Green Room – 9. 0%Year: 2. Rating: 9. 0% based on 2. A grim look at something could the horror of something that could actually happen, Green Room came from acclaimed director Jeremy Saulnier and blew critics away in 2. Low- budget movies are far too easily dubbed “indie” horrors, but Green Room deserves that title with its jagged look at how easily those around us can be influenced. It is hard to pinpoint what made Green Room the runaway success that it was, but something stuck to the bottom of your shoe like old gum from the film’s grungy nightclub setting. To say that the film’s 9. One of those toe- curling films that has you screaming at the screen, Green Room is at times an uncomfortable watch, packed with blood- splatters, animal violence, and more than enough human mutilation. While it can be accused of being slightly slow to start, the pace certainly picked up in the second half. The confounding likeable cast of heroes and antiheroes were dispatched in quick succession and graphic gore, meaning that Green Room wasn’t a film that hung around. The Love Witch – 9. Year: 2. 01. 6Rating: 9. As a nod to a bygone era, 2. The Love Witch is a deliberate homage to the B- movie horrors of the . Instead, the lead character is a witch – but not in the typical sense. Samantha Robinson’s Elaine is a Hepburn of an actress, who attempts magic with disastrous results; think of her as a haphazard Elizabeth Montgomery in Bewitched. She sophisticatedly motors around the coast in her scarlet mustang, leaving a trail of destruction in her wake. The Love Witch is a power trip for women, but Elaine learns that sometimes things can work too well as the men around her fall victim to her spells. Elaine and everything around her burns bright red, from her red dresses to her matching luggage, further amping up the horror. She verges on the occult and almost seems like a more realistic of Cassandra Peterson’s Elvira. Underneath all the pastels beats a much darker heart of the film, and while director Anna Biller may resemble Wes Anderson in her style, The Love Witch is definitely not twee. Train To Busan – 9. Year: 2. 01. 6Rating: 9. All aboard the zombie express. Adding to this list’s already substantial zombie horde, Train To Busan found yet another way to reinvigorate Romero’s version of shuffling sickies. Yeon Sang- Ho applied his directorial magic to a few heroes trapped with the undead on the rails of a South Korean train. By confining 9. 0% of the action to the simple carriages of a bullet train, Busan can at times feel a little claustrophobic but is all the better for it. You had all the typical stereotypes you would expect from a horror film: the loving father, the estranged daughter, the upper- class villain, the sacrificial hero, the pregnant women, and the token elderly person. Busan’s use of quick- moving World War Z- esque zombies are all the more terrifying when smashing through the glass of a train, however, the final quarter of the film literally derailed (in a good way) and took the outbreak further. Speeding through 2. Western remake, this means that Busan was definitely not the last stop for this train. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night – 9. Year: 2. 01. 4Rating: 9. Tagged as the first “Iranian vampire Western,” Ana Lily Amirpour’s 2. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night certainly has the market cornered. Part Spaghetti Western, part gothic horror, and part graphic novel, Girl Walks Home is so stylized, it is almost a shame to finish it. A hijab- wearing Nosferatu is the premise of the film, as she seduces a downtrodden Iranian named Arash. Played by the Iranian James Dean – Arash Marandi – Arash cares for his heroin- addict father while being drawn into a world of drugs and crime. Forget the likes of Twilight, Girl Walks Home teases us into the barring of the vampire’s fangs, proving this isn’t your standard vamp- fest, while the black and white sparks imagination that you are watching some surreal David Lynch movie unravel in front of you. Amirpour puts her cinematic skills to the test, but there is an equally perfect soundtrack to accompany her debut. Sure, the subgenre may remain untouched for a while/forever, but with A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night propping it up, who really cares? The Loved Ones – 9. Year: 2. 01. 2Rating: 9. The Loved Ones turns teen dream into teen scream. As an Annie Wilkes of Australian horror, Robin Mc. Leavy excels in the role of Lola. She is a non- supernatural Carrie, who just wants her prom night to be perfect. Any sympathy for the outcast Lola is soon lost as she puts her sickening plan in progress to nab the dreamboat boy from her school. As psycho women go, Lola is up there with the best, which sadly makes Mc. Leavy easily hateable. Long- haired heartthrob Brent (Xavier Samuels) clearly has some issues at home since the death of his father, but surely he wouldn’t run away before the big prom? And John Brumpton’s role as Lola’s doting father is equal parts caring and creepy, while the final act twist treads into monster movie territory. What elevates The Loved Ones above your typical hillbilly horror is its use of graphic torture alongside the song “Not Pretty Enough” by Casey Chambers, which is put to great ironic use by director Sean Byrne. You will wince more than once, including when Brent’s chest is carved with a giant love heart, the scenes of lobotomy, and an unusual use for draining fluid. The Loved Ones is a film that will stick with you like salt to a wound. Under The Shadow. Hawaii Five- 0 TV Show: News, Videos, Full Episodes and More. Mc. Kenzie seems to be settling into her role with ease and comfort, but her ability to see through a maze of relationships and clues remains a bit far fetched. Nevertheless, the story has enough ingredients to hold one's interest until the solution is revealed. Well worth watching, especially for Marple fans. The only false note is JOAN COLLINS' flamboyant performance as Ruth. Her opening scene, especially, with Miss Marple is poorly written and directed. Trivia note: ELLIOT COWAN who plays the American Wally, is (excuse the expression) a dead ringer for Heath Ledger- -even has some of his mannerisms. Incredible likeness.
